THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INSURANCE COMMISSIONERS (NAIC)
www.naic.org/about/background.htm
The NAIC is a non-profit, voluntary association of insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four United States territories. The NAIC serves several functions including coordinating efforts among the states in the area of insurance regulation and solvency oversight; providing technical assistance to the states; promoting consistency in the examination of multi-state insurance companies; valuing, on a uniform basis, securities held by insurance companies; and facilitating the drafting and adoption of model insurance laws and regulations. Since the regulation of insurance is a function of state governments, the NAIC serves a critical function by providing centralized support services to the states.
