Here's What We Know….
- 20% of children and adolescents have signs and symptoms of a DSM-IV disorder within the course of a year
- Less than 20% of people needing mental health services actually get them
- A child with a parent who has a mood disorder has a 40% chance of having an episode of major depression by age 20. In addition, children of depressed parents are at increased risk for anxiety disorders, conduct disorder and alcohol dependence (depressed parents are less able to respond to children with smiles and in setting limits; less able to model effective coping strategies; biological/genetic variables)
Youth and young adults with emotional and behavioral difficulties often find their transition from adolescence through young adulthood to be particularly challenging. Their unique behavioral or emotional challenges and possible financial hardships, family stress, limited coping and social skills, loneliness, and minimal vocational skills and employment experience create barriers that make the adjustment during this transition extremely difficult. In addition services lack coordination and are limited.
