One-Hour Phone Call

During the call, a panel of youth/young adults will:
  1. Describe their participation at the state and/or community level in
    Title V CYSHCN programs and special initiatives as members of advisory
    councils or as consultants.
  2. Describe their reasons for becoming involved and their expectations.
  3. Identify specific issues/challenges in the health care system that
    they are facing and would like to see the youth advisory councils address.
  4. Describe resources available to youth advisors.

    North Carolina Integrated Services Grant - Carolina Health and Transition Project (CHAT)

    Caroline Ambrose is a member of North Carolina’s Youth/Young Adult Advisory Group, which has been in existence since 2004, but was expanded in 2007 to recruit a team of emerging leaders in conjunction with North Carolina’s Project of National Significance grant. Carrie is employed as a peer advocate with the Center for Independent Living in Raleigh and serves on First in Families Wake County consumer & family advisory committees.
  • Ryan Duffy
    Mountain States Genetics Regional Collaborative, Texas

    Ryan Duffy is a member of the Mountain States Regional Genetics Collaborative serving on 3 workgroups focusing on the medical home and transition; newborn screening; and, telemedicine as a means of extending access to rural communities. He is a tax accountant in Dallas, Texas but grew up and went to school (where he got his Master’s in Accounting) in Montana.

    Becoming Leaders for Tomorrow (BLT) Project, Utah

    Justin Olson is a member of the Utah youth advisory council, which began in the fall of 2005 as a subcommittee of the Utah Integrated Services Project. The group transitioned to the Becoming Leaders for Tomorrow (BLT) Project Advisory Committee in October 2007. Justin also is a director of Best Buddies of Utah, which links college students who serve as friends and mentors to persons with intellectual disabilities. Justin is employed by a real estate training company.

    Christina Russell is a member of the New York State Youth Advisory Council.
    Christiana, who is certified to act as a lay advocate for children & youth with disabilities, is extensively involved in her community serving on the auxiliary of her fire department, Family Champions, & the football boosters. She was recently presented with the 2008 Excelsior Award by New York Assemblywoman Janet L.Duprey and the Assembly Minority Conference. The award is presented to individuals who have overcome physical or other personal challenges to achieve great accomplishments and serve others in the community.

    Michigan Early Adult Transition Task-Force (EATT)

    In addition to serving as member of the Michigan Early Adult Transition Task-Force, Matt is a member of the State Title V CYSHCN Advisory Council. He also served as a youth advisor during the agency’s strategic planning process. Matt is in his last semester studying for a political science/pre-law degree at Michigan State University.

The HRTW Center is headquartered at the Maine State Title V CSHN Program. Activities are coordinated through the Maine Support Network's Center for Self-Determination, Health and Policy. The Center is funded through a cooperative agreement (U39MC06899-01-00) from the Integrated Services Branch, Division of Services for Children with Special Health Care Needs (DSCSHN) in the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
